Then compare the exact label with the evidence. For a probiotic, ask for the full organism and strain identity, viable count at the end of shelf life rather than only at manufacture, storage requirements, and studies using the same preparation. Also review inactive ingredients, flavorings, calorie contribution, allergens, and whether the format makes accurate use practical. Avoid changing the diet and adding several supplements simultaneously, because that makes it difficult to understand why stool, appetite, gas, or comfort changed.
A synbiotic includes probiotic microorganisms and a prebiotic substrate. It may be complementary, meaning each component works independently, or synergistic, meaning the substrate is intended for the co-administered microorganism.
